We describe how Wi-Fi can play a big part in a Digital Transformation strategy, giving examples of Digital Transformation work within the NHS.

We have already helped with the Wi-Fi strategy of two NHS Trusts recently, these are Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (SWBH) is one of the largest NHS teaching Trusts in England, with a number of hospital sites, including Sandwell Hospital in West Bromwich and City Hospital in Birmingham. A further flagship site, the Midland Metopolitan Hospital is still under construction.

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a merger between Bedford Hospital and Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Both organisations are using Wi-Fi to underpin their digital transformation strategies.

So what is digital transformation in an NHS setting? Well, it revolves around an electronic patient record (EPR) system and the integration of clinical systems around it. This integration allows patient information to be accessed and updated anywhere in the hospital from fixed or mobile devices. There are no paper systems, and the results of regular monitoring of patient vitals using mobile devices are loaded directly into the patient record using the wireless network. This improves the speed and quality of care, allowing the NHS to offer better help to more people at a reduced cost.

The Public Wi-Fi service, NHS Wi-Fi, also uses big-data to keep patients up to date with information relevant to them, ensuring better health awareness for all.

Since Wi-Fi underpins this digital transformation, it is very important to get it right.

The way Wi-Fi works is often misunderstood, and that was the motivation for starting IP Networks Ltd in the first place. That is why we publish technical information to highlight the key difficulties, and help organisations get their Wi-Fi strategies right.

An independent assessment to determine the criteria for hospital Wi-Fi is very important, because it establishes a firm stake in the ground that represents the necessary design requirements. This makes planning easier, and it also ensures that when you go out to tender for different vendor or reseller solutions, you can make a clear apples-for-apples comparison between responses to achieve quality and best value.

Project delivery can be tracked against the design specification, and by providing an independent verification that the agreed design requirements have been implemented, we can give you total peace of mind.

With years of experience of large network procurements we can also help with independent consultancy, design, measurement, troubleshooting and project management to assist with the procurement life cycle, as we have done working with the NHS.
